Symptoms of a sluggish body needing some nourishment

Are you constantly tired? Sluggish? Bloated? Having mood swings? Lacking energy?

These could all be signs that your diet needs a revamp!

As a dietitian, I see clients on a daily basis who are struggling with fatigue, digestion issues and lacking energy for exercise and life in general. When I assess their diets, I can see why!

They are surviving off stimulants like caffeine and refined sugars and consuming copious amounts of process foods loaded with saturated fats, chemical additives and no real nutrition. Their diets are basically void of fresh fruits, vegetables and water, which are what their bodies are really craving. This leaves them with sluggish digestive systems, unstable blood sugar levels and an overall deep level of fatigue.

If this sounds anything like you, then it might be time for a cleanse. Time to cut the fake foods and nourish your body with real food. Your body is an amazing creation. It has extraordinary systems for removing toxins from your body. Our lungs, kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract and immune system remove and neutralise toxic substances within hours after we eat them. But your body can’t do this day in, day out, if everything you are eating and drinking is unhealthy.

If you want to feel amazing, you need to feed your body what it really needs. It’s time to clean out your diet and give your body the nourishment that it deserves! You will feel energised and it will help get you jumping out of bed in the morning, ready to take on the world.

Try these 1-week cleanse and nourishment challenges:

Here is a list of challenges you can try for 1 week to help cleanse your body and get your energy back! You can choose 1 challenge to do per week, or you can try a few (or even all of them) at once. After a week, see the difference that you feel health wise and then you can challenge yourself to continue it.

  • Caffeine Challenge – NO caffeine for a week

Far too often, caffeine is used to suppress fatigue and supplement proper energy intake from food. However, this can cause a cycle of chronic tiredness, interfering with sleep patterns and causing a dependence on caffeine for daily living. Are you stuck in a caffeine rut? Go caffeine free for a week! If you usually skip breakfast and have a coffee instead, you will need to plan your breakfast and always start with a healthy option such as fresh fruit and low-fat yoghurt, rolled oats and homemade muesli.

  • Water Challenge: – 2 litres of water per day

H2O is essential for helping your body flush out toxins. Challenge yourself to drink 2 litres of water every day and no other fluids like alcohol, cordial, soft drink or energy drinks! A good strategy is to drink a cup of water before and after every main meal and always keep a drink bottle with you.

  • Refined Sugar Challenge – Eliminate refined sugar 

Detox your body of refined sugars by having a week of no sweets. This will include chocolate, biscuits, cakes, slices, lollies, softdrinks, sauces. An easy way to do this is to eat less packaged foods and more fresh foods. Check the labels of all the foods you eat and if it contains sugar, put it back. This will be a big challenge, as sugar is added to so many packaged foods but is essential for cleansing your body.

  • Fruit & Veg Challenge- Minimum 2 fruits and 5 vegetables each day 

Get back to basics and nourish your body with wholesome, unprocessed, natural fruits and vegetables. The fibre in fruits and vegetables is perfect for cleansing your body. Challenge yourself to eat at least 2 different types of fruits and 5 different types of vegetables each day.
