We all know that ‘minerals’ are important for our diet and that we need them to be ‘healthy’. Yet, surprisingly a lot of people don’t actually know why we need minerals and the importance they have on our overall health.

Minerals have a variety of functions on the body. Like vitamins, they help your body grow, develop, and stay healthy. Our bodies use minerals to perform many different functions such as building bones, creating hormones, maintaining a healthy heartbeat and also helping in transmitting nerve impulses.

Minerals are elements like chromium, magnesium, iron, calcium and zinc which make up the building blocks of life on Earth and also in us. Without them, we struggle to perform at our ultimate best. Infact, In Australia, mineral depletion is a common problem. Results from the last Australian Health Survey (2012) has shown evidence that calcium deficiency is a problem for a lot of Australians.

“Nearly three quarters of females, 73 per cent, and half of all males, 51 per cent, aged two years and over do not meet their calcium requirements based on their intakes from food”

Moreover, 23% of women in Australia have inadequate iron levels. Low iron levels can lead to fatigue, tiredness and also anemia.

A depletion of minerals in our bodies can lead to a variety of health problems, such as weak bones, fatigue, or a decreased immune system.

Important Minerals Our Bodies Need To Perform

Although there is an array of minerals available to us, it is important to know the ones we need on a daily basis:

Calcium plays an important role in providing firmness and elasticity to the skin. It is also commonly known for maintaining strong bones and teeth. Not only that, but calcium also controls alkaline pH Levels in our bodies as well as helping to transport nutrients across cell membranes in our bodies.

Magnesium helps to contribute to energy production within our bodies and also helps to keep the nervous system healthy. Magnesium is particularly important in aiding muscle movements, helping them to contract and relax.

Selenium is an essential mineral for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness.

Zinc plays a vital role in protein synthesis which is essential for skin health and assists with skin conditions such as acne.

Obtaining Minerals For Our Diet

Research has suggested farming methods are depleting natural resources of minerals, meaning that the food we eat may not be as mineral rich as our body needs.

The best way to obtain minerals in our diet effectively is by organic sources. As organic sources of food have not been depleted by agricultural methods, the mineral count is a lot higher.

However, like everything in life nowadays, we want everything quick and easy. Purchasing several different food types to obtain our mineral quota everyday is not always sustainable, and gets expensive.

Using a food supplement instead can help to support your mineral intake.
