Collagen is and has been a hot topic of discussion over the past few years, mainly because of the positive effects it can do to your body. Collagen is so important because it makes up 70% of our skin, as well as 90% of connective tissues and organic bone mass. After 25, our bodies natural production of collagen slows down showing signs of ageing such as wrinkles, sagging skin and joint health. Understanding that collagen can reduce the signs of ageing, more and more people are now supplementing with collagen to replenish their lost collagen supply and obtain its health benefits.

Collagen types 1 and 3 all contribute to support skin, muscles, bone health, hair and nail growth. These can be found in cows (bovine), pigs (porcine) and fish (piscine). Over 90 percent of collagen in the body is comprised of Type 1 & 3 collagen therefore it is essential to maintain these levels with supplementation.

Bovine and Porcine collagen is one of the most popular collagens on the market due to its high accessibility and Porcine being quite similar to human collagen. Marine Collagen however (piscine) is derived from the scales or skin of fish. Collagen from fish is absorbed more efficiently into the body as it has superior bioavailability over Bovine or Porcine types.

For Joint Health | Type 2

Popping knees or stiff legs may be considered a normal part of us growing old. Although these issues may be common, their cause is often related to the reduction of collagen Type 2 production in our bodies.

Collagen Type 2 makes up 50% of cartilage protein, which is why cartilage is weakened when our collagen levels start to drop. When we lack adequate amounts of cartilage and hyaluronic acid for our joints which collagen provides, they will eventually rub together and cause a myriad of pain and inflammation issues.

Chicken (fowl) based collagen sources are known to be effective for supporting cartilage in the body, therefore Type II collagen supplements are usually from chicken. However, these are not considered as effective as fish collagen peptides in raising overall body collagen levels.
